Illinois Senator Charles H. Percy was a strong advocate for building the waterfront park.  He served as co-chair of the Georgetown Waterfront Park Commission and remained a staunch supporter of the park and of high school rowing programs until his death in 2011.  The local high school rowing championship competition is named the Charles H. Percy Regatta.  The Percy-Rockefeller family honored Senator Percy’s memory by making a substantial contribution towards completing Phase 2 of the park.  To recognize Senator Percy’s long commitment to Georgetown Waterfront Park, the District of Columbia government designated the main entrance to the park, at intersection of Wisconsin Avenue, N.W., and K Street., N.W., “Senator Charles H. Percy Plaza.”
